A young man was allegedly lynched by a group of students on suspicion of theft in Rajshahi city on Thursday night.
The deceased was Rakibul Hasan Rocky, 32, a resident of the Hetemkha Karigorpara area in the city.
Following the incident, the police arrested three students of Rajshahi Nursing College on Friday morning.
Rajshahi metropolitan police additional deputy commissioner and spokesperson Gaziur Rahman said that a group of students detained Rocky near Charu Mama’s canteen in front of Rajshahi Medical College.
The students allegedly beat him with stamp-like objects, striking his hands, legs and back repeatedly, he said.
At one stage, Rocky sustained critical injuries and was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital at about 8:30pm, where doctors on-duty declared him dead.
Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Rajpara police station, said that Rocky’s sister filed a murder case against unidentified persons over the killing, and they had arrested three students of Rajshahi Nursing College.
‘Efforts are under way to identify and arrest other individuals involved in the incident,’ the police official added.
