Manchester City face a major midfield reshuffle after Spain captain Rodri agreed to join Barcelona for around £65 million.
The 30-year-old leaves the Etihad after seven seasons, 298 appearances and 12 major trophies, including four Premier League titles and the Champions League. His departure leaves new manager Enzo Maresca with the difficult task of replacing one of the most influential defensive midfielders in world football.
“All the teams need a Rodri,” Maresca said after City's Community Shield defeat by Arsenal.
But City are unlikely to find a direct replacement. Instead, several midfielders are in the frame.
Ayyoub Bouaddi
The 18-year-old Lille midfielder appears to be City's leading target. The Morocco international is reportedly valued at around £85 million and has attracted interest throughout the summer.
Bouaddi operates as a deep-lying midfielder, making him the closest stylistic match to Rodri. His composure and ability to dictate play have made him one of Europe's most exciting young talents.
His age, however, would make replacing Rodri a huge responsibility.
Enzo Fernandez
Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez remains another option.
City did not make a bid before Chelsea's deadline for offers, with the Blues reportedly demanding around £120 million for the Argentina international.
Fernandez is capable of playing as a defensive midfielder or further forward. He scored a career-best 15 goals last season and already knows Maresca's system from their time together at Chelsea.
Alex Scott
Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott is also on City's radar.
The 22-year-old offers energy, ball-carrying ability and strength in midfield, although Bournemouth have made it clear they do not want to sell after rejecting a £64 million bid from Chelsea.
Scott would not replace Rodri directly but could give Maresca greater flexibility in midfield.
Alexis Mac Allister
Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister is another experienced possibility.
The Argentina international has two years left on his Anfield contract and brings Premier League experience, technical quality and the ability to play in several midfield roles.
A move, however, would depend on Liverpool being willing to sell to a domestic rival. That, though, is highly unlikely.
City have already signed Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, giving Maresca another midfield option.
Rather than finding one player to replicate Rodri, City could spread his responsibilities across several midfielders.
Bouaddi looks the closest stylistic fit, Fernandez offers proven quality and versatility, while Scott and Mac Allister provide different solutions.
Whoever arrives, replacing Rodri will be one of Maresca's biggest challenges in his first season at Manchester City.
