Farzana Rupa, former principal correspondent at Ekattor Television who is currently in jail over a murder linked to the 2024 July Movement, has been admitted to Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) Hospital.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Akhtar Hasib Dewan, DIG (Health) at the Department of Prisons, she was moved to BMU on Aug 30.

"On the advice of specialist doctors, she was transferred from jail to the hospital," he said.

A prison official added that she fell ill while in custody that day and was subsequently shifted to the prison cell at BMU.

Prison official Masud Hasan Jewel, with the Prisons Department's media wing, told reporters she is suffering from fatty liver disease and gynaecological complications.

Rupa was arrested on Aug 21, 2024, at Shahjalal International Airport along with her husband, journalist Shakil Ahmed, as the couple attempted to leave the country.

Both have since been named as accused in several cases filed in 2024.
