The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has opened an inquiry against four people, including former adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, over allegations of various irregularities and corruption involving recruitment, transfers and procurement syndicates at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Several local media outlets reported the development on Wednesday, citing the ACC.

A four-member investigation team has already been formed to look into the allegations, with ACC Deputy Director Md Zahid Kalam leading the team.

The other accused are the then secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Md Mahbub-ul-Alam, Joint Secretary Dr Shaikh Mohammad Jobayed Hossain, and Deputy Secretary Md Masum Ahmed.

According to the media reports citing ACC sources, allegations of corruption involving thousands of crores of taka have been raised against Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, a former adviser to the interim government formed following the July mass uprising and spokesperson of the National Citizen Party (NCP).

The allegations include taking bribes to facilitate illegal activities, transferring money abroad illegally and engaging in illegal Bitcoin transactions.

There are also allegations that Asif Mahmud received various illegal benefits through his then assistant private secretary (APS), Moazzem Hossain.
