Four people were killed and two others injured after a pickup van overturned in the Manikchhari area of Rangamati district town early today.

The deceased were identified as Meghrani Chakma, 45, of Krishnama Chhara in Naniarchar upazila; Shobha Chakma, 52, of Ghilachhari union in the same upazila; Shantana Chakma, 38, of Amanatbagh in Rangamati town; and Shanti Ranjan Chakma, 65, of Bijoynagar.

According to locals, the accident occurred around 5:30am as the victims were travelling to Kutukchhari Bazar in Rangamati Sadar with goods to sell at a weekly market when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it overturned.

The injured -- pickup driver Gyan Bikash Chakma, 50, and Suman Chakma, 45 -- are undergoing treatment at Rangamati General Hospital.

Doctors at the hospital's emergency department said three bodies were brought there following the accident. Two injured people are receiving treatment, while one was referred to Chattogram for advanced care.

Rangamati Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Jasim Uddin told The Daily Star that three people died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries on the way to Chattogram. The bodies have been kept at the morgue of Rangamati General Hospital for autopsy.
