Google is testing a new proximity-based file transfer feature for Android called Tap to Share, which would allow users to share files by simply bringing two phones together, mirroring the experience of Apple's AirDrop on iPhone.
Code discovered within Google Play Services v26.30.31 reveals that the feature, when activated, would allow users to skip the current step of manually selecting Quick Share from the share sheet. Instead, after tapping the share button in any app, users would be able to immediately tap their device against a recipient's phone to begin the transfer, removing one step from the current process.
The same code also shows Google testing a dedicated settings toggle that would allow users to disable Tap to Share entirely, for those who prefer to stick with the existing Quick Share process or are concerned about accidental transfers.
Google has not yet made a formal announcement about the feature. The code was identified through an APK teardown, meaning it reflects work in progress and may not necessarily reach a public release in its current form.
