A man was killed and another two people went missing when a passenger launch hit another at the capital’s Sadarghat launch terminal on Wednesday evening.
The deceased man’s wife was injured in the incident.
A search operation has been launched to find the missing people, according to the River Police.
The incident occurred at about 5:30pm Wednesday, on the second day of the weeklong Eid holiday rush, when passengers were boarding a launch from a small trawler.
According to the police, another launch struck the launch on which passengers were embarking, trapping several passengers between the two launches.
Confirming the casualties, Kotwali police officer-in-charge KM Faisal Ahmed, said that a youth had died and his wife was undergoing treatment.
Besides, at least two persons remained missing, he said, adding that the fire service teams had launched rescue operations.
The deceased had been identified as Md Sohel Fakir, 22, son of Miraj Fakir from Char Khagkata village in Mehendiganj upazila of Barishal.
Among the missing is Miraj Hossain, 40, Sohel’s father-in-law. The identity of the other missing person remained unknown.
The injured passenger, Rupa Akter, 20, wife of deceased Sohel Fakir, is currently receiving treatment at a city hospital. Preliminary reports indicated that the accident occurred when passengers were boarding a launch via a trawler when another vessel MV Zaker-3 rammed into it from behind, triggering the fatal accident.
