Local government, rural development and cooperatives minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said that local government elections across Bangladesh could begin in September or October this year, subject to the availability of budgetary allocations.

Replying to a starred question from Jamalpur-3 lawmaker Mostafizur Rahman Babul in the Jatiya Sangsad, the minister in his written answer said that the government planned to complete elections to all tiers of local government institutions within the next year.

The elections would cover union parishads, municipalities, upazila parishads, zila parishads and city corporations, he said.

According to the minister, union parishad elections are likely to be held first, followed by polls to other local government bodies in phases.

He said that elections to all 13 city corporations, including the newly formed Bogura City Corporation, would also be completed within the same timeframe.
