A 55-year-old man was killed after being hit by a train while trying to save a child playing on the railway tracks in the Sholoshahar area of Chattogram today.

The child, who was critically injured in the incident, later died while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

The deceased man, identified as Delwar Hossain Mintu of Fulgazi upazila in Feni, worked as an electrician.

The incident occurred around noon when the Cox's Bazar-bound Tourist Express from Dhaka was heading towards Sholoshahar after crossing Gate-2 level crossing.

Police said two children were playing on the railway tracks on a bridge. Seeing the train approaching at high speed, Mintu rushed to save them. He was hit by the train and died on the spot.

One of the children, identified as Md Rahat, 10, was critically injured. One of his hands was severed in the incident. He was taken to CMCH, where he later died while undergoing treatment, his father Omar Faruk confirmed.

Sujon Kumar, officer-in-charge of Chattogram Railway Police Station, told The Daily Star that Mintu fell under the train while trying to save a child and died on the spot.

“There were two children on the railway tracks on the bridge. As the train was approaching at high speed, a person jumped into the canal below with one of the children. Mintu tried to save another child, but fell under the train,” he said.

Rahat’s father, Omar Faruk, told The Daily Star, “I came to the hospital after hearing about the accident. My son is no more.”
