Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed today said the government has taken no initiative regarding any possible resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

"If the honourable president wants to resign due to health reasons or for any other reason, that option is available to him under the Constitution. But we do not know," he told reporters at the Secretariat.

"There are no steps from the government," he said, adding that they had seen the media reports like everyone else.

"If the president wants to resign, the Constitution provides the procedure. There is a rule that he has to submit his resignation letter to the Speaker if he wants to resign," he added.

"If such a thing happens, we will also come to know," he said.

Asked about media reports claiming that the president spoke to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina over the phone during his medical trip to London, the home minister said, “I don't know.”
