A three-day documentary retrospective celebrating the work of Paris-based filmmaker and poet Amirul Arham begins today (April 9) at Alliance Française de Dhaka, spotlighting a body of work that spans Bangladesh and global contexts.

Titled “Amirul Arham Documentary Film Retrospective”, the programme runs until April 11 at the organisation’s Auditorium Nouvelle Vague in Dhanmondi. Two films will be screened each day at 3:00pm and 5:00pm.

The selection brings together six documentaries that explore overlooked histories, social realities, and contemporary experiences. A key highlight is the world premiere of “Shantiniketan: Echoes of Time”, offering audiences a first look at Arham’s latest work.

Each day will conclude with an interactive question-and-answer session at 6:30pm, allowing viewers to engage directly with the filmmaker and gain insight into his creative process.

The opening day features screenings of “The 1971 War in the Eyes of Pakistan” at 3:00pm and “L’Eau du Diable” (The Devil’s Water) at 5:00pm.

On April 10, the programme continues with “La Oblige du Bangladesh” (The Lost Souls of Bangladesh) at 3:00pm and “Gen-Z Bangladesh” at 5:00pm.

The final day, April 11, will screen “Jafrullah: A People’s Doctor” at 3:00pm, followed by the premiere of “Shantiniketan: Echoes of Time” at 5:00pm.

Arham is a recipient of the Etoiles de la Scam, awarded by SCAM for excellence in documentary and audiovisual storytelling. His films have been broadcast on French and European television networks and are preserved in institutions such as the National Library of France and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
