Global music star Bad Bunny is set to take on his first leading role in a major Hollywood production. The Puerto Rican singer will headline the historical drama “Porto Rico”, marking a significant step in his transition from music to cinema.

The film, described as a tribute to Puerto Rico’s history and identity, will see Bad Bunny — born Benito Antonio — star alongside Javier Bardem, Edward Norton and Viggo Mortensen. The project will be directed by Puerto Rican rapper Residente (René Pérez), with Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G Iñárritu attached as executive producer.

Reports indicate that “Porto Rico” has been in development since 2023. The narrative is partly inspired by the life of José Maldonado Román, also known as Águila Blanca (White Eagle), a revolutionary figure who led resistance movements against Spanish colonial rule in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Director Residente described the film as deeply personal, calling it a powerful reaffirmation of Puerto Rican identity. He said the project aims to present the country’s history with intensity and honesty, noting that he has long dreamed of bringing such a story to the screen.

Edward Norton, who joins the ensemble cast, compared the film to classic cinematic epics, suggesting it will combine sweeping historical drama with complex political themes. He added that audiences familiar with Residente’s lyrical talent would now witness his visual storytelling abilities, especially in collaboration with Bad Bunny.

The film is expected to blend themes of rebellion, politics and cultural identity within a grand historical narrative.

While Bad Bunny has previously appeared in supporting roles in Hollywood projects such as “Bullet Train” and “Caught Stealing”, “Porto Rico” marks his first outing as a leading man — underscoring his expanding presence beyond the global music stage.
