Workers of Talha Spinning Mill staged a protest late Thursday night by blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur, demanding payment of their overdue wages.
The blockade, which began around 11:00pm near MC Bazar, caused severe traffic congestion on both sides of the highway, leaving passengers and transport operators stranded.
According to the workers, their salaries for May have not yet been cleared despite repeated assurances from the factory authorities.
At around 12:00am, Mohammad Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Maona Highway Police Station, told The Daily Star that the workers were continuing their road blockade. “I am at the scene and discussing the matter with both the workers and the factory management in an effort to resolve the issue. For now, highway traffic remains suspended due to the workers’ protest,” he said.
Attempts to contact the factory authorities for comments were unsuccessful
