Bangladesh’s High Performance (HP) unit is set for a facelift, according to Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) sources, although so far the overhaul appears limited largely to a reshuffling of coaching personnel rather than a broader structural reform.
The move is aimed at strengthening the pipeline to the national side but at present the changes seem more cosmetic.
Former national selector Abdur Razzak is set to join as spin bowling coach, with several other high-profile appointments also under consideration.
BCB sources further claimed that the restructuring of the HP unit would effectively make the Bangladesh Tigers programme redundant. The programme, headed by Sohel Islam, is now likely to be phased out as its functions overlap with the revamped HP setup.
Bangladesh senior assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin is set to take charge as head coach of the HP unit, while Sohel Islam is expected to join as a senior coach.
“We are getting a new setup in the HP unit and Salahuddin bhai and Sohel bhai are set to join,” a BCB source informed.
The board is also searching for batting and pace bowling coaches as part of the restructuring process.
“We are also looking for batting and pace bowling coaches and the president [of BCB’s ad hoc committee] will discuss those in the coming days. We have not been able to settle down the HP unit and these moves are being made to strengthen the unit,” a senior HP official said.
Former national batter Rajin Saleh is understood to be one of the frontrunners for the batting coach role.
Salahuddin, meanwhile, is expected to begin his HP duties in June, although how he will balance those responsibilities alongside his role with the national team remains unclear.
BCB sources also indicated that Razzak, who previously served as a BCB director under Aminul Islam Bulbul’s board, is likely to join on a two-year contract.
“The board has not decided on the contract but it is likely to be a two-year contract. Verbally the deal has been agreed upon and the signing will confirm the length of his contract,” a BCB official informed.
