A businesswoman was stabbed to death over a dispute in the Dulal Market area of ward 35 in Gazipur city on Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified as Ranu Begum, 40.

Police arrested the prime accused, Ashiq Islam Swapan, 27, in a raid at Bhaluka police station area of Mymensingh around 2:00am on Sunday.

Ashiq is the former general secretary of the ward 35 unit of Gazipur Metropolitan Chhatra Dal.

The deceased owned a clothing store named "Rani Fashion Gallery" in Dulal Market.

According to police and local sources, Ashiq had an altercation over monetary exchange with Ranu. As things escalated, Ashiq attacked her with a knife around 11:00am.

Ranu’s son, Hridoy, 22, was also stabbed when he tried to save his mother.

Both were rushed to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Ranu dead.

Hridoy later filed a murder case that night.

Officer-in-Charge of Gacha police station, Moniruzzaman, confirmed the arrest and said efforts are underway to detain two more suspects.

Gazipur Metropolitan Chhatra Dal President Rohanuzzaman Shukkur told media that the organisation does not condone such acts.

"If Ashiq has committed a crime, then we demand exemplary punishment for him. He was in the previous committee. Currently, he is not involved in any activities of the organisation," he added.
