A Chandpur court today sent a man to jail on charges of failing to support his mother and physically assaulting her in Shahrasti upazila.
The accused, Abu Yusuf Patwari, 35, is son of late Hafiz Ahmad Patwari and Shefali Begum of Cheriara village in the upazila, said Mir Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Shahrasti Model Police Station.
A police team arrested Yusuf after his sister Rokeya Begum filed a case with Shahrasti Model Police Station on Monday under Section 5 of the Parents' Maintenance Act, 2013, said Mohammad Abdul Quddus Sarkar, a sub-inspector of the police station.
He was produced before a court today, which sent him to jail, the police official added.
According to the case statement, Yusuf had misbehaved with his elderly mother on several occasions. On June 2, he allegedly assaulted her, leaving her seriously injured.
OC Mahbubur said the case serves as an example of the enforcement of the Parents' Maintenance Act. "It is the responsibility of the offspring to take care of their parents. Legal action has been taken based on the complaint," he said.
Recently, the government has withdrawn AKM Anisur Rahman, member (joint secretary) of the Mongla Port Authority, and attached him to the Ministry of Public Administration following the death of his elderly mother at a flat in Dhaka’s Mirpur, an incident that has sparked widespread discussion and allegations of neglect.
