A 60-year-old man died of a heatstroke while waiting in a long queue for fuel at a filling station amid a heatwave in Rajshahi’s Mohanpur upazila today.

The deceased Alauddin, 60, was of Bakshoil village under Kesharhat municipality.

Rajshahi has been experiencing a heatwave for the past three days. The district meteorological office today recorded a maximum temperature of 40°C, the highest in the district so far this season.

Quoting witnesses, Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mohanpur Police Station, said Alauddin had been standing in line for a long time to collect fuel at Kesharhat Filling Station around 12:00pm.

“At one stage, he fell ill due to excessive heat and collapsed on the ground,” the OC said.

Locals rescued him and took him to Mohanpur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival, the police official added.

Sabina Yesmin, additional superintendent of police in Rajshahi, told this correspondent that the man had come to the filling station to buy diesel, likely for irrigation purposes.

On information, Mohanpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Fahima Binte Akhtar visited the spot.

“I learned at the scene that the man died from heatstroke. The hospital too confirmed that it was the cause of death,” she said, adding that the upazila administration would assist if the victim’s family applied for government support or compensation.

The OC further said police later visited the victim’s home and recorded details of the incident.

As the family did not file any complaint, the body was handed over for burial without an autopsy.
