Yeasin Khan alias Palash, also known as “Kailla Palash”, succumbed to his injuries a week after being shot in Dhaka’s West Rampura on June 12.
Palash died while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital last night, Md Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Hatirjheel Police Station, told The Daily Star today.
He was transferred there from Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment, the OC said.
Described by police as a “top criminal”, Palash was shot in the head and critically injured in West Rampura, just over a month after his release from prison.
“He was a top criminal with many cases filed against him, including murder charges,” the OC said soon after the shooting.
Palash, 50, had spent about 24 years in prison in connection with the murder of a Jubo Dal leader and was released one month and eight days ago, according to his relatives.
Police sources said he operated in the Rampura and Badda areas.
Although the motive behind the attack could not be confirmed, law enforcement officials said they were investigating possible angles, including past enmity, turf conflicts, and rivalries within the criminal underworld.
Palash’s brother Alamin said that after his release from jail, Palash had become involved in the internet and cable TV network business.
On May 29, 2002, a trial court sentenced Palash to death in the murder case of Jubo Dal leader Mizan, who was shot dead in Rampura. The High Court later commuted the sentence to life imprisonment.
Palash made headlines again in 2016 after it emerged that he had been admitted to hospitals from prison, reportedly by posing as a patient and receiving family visits during those stays.
