Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal president Rakibul Islam Rakib on Thursday accused the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student body Islami Chhatra Shibir of trying to promote a revised narrative denying their role in the War of Independence.

After paying tribute to the martyrs of the War of Independence, Rakib told reporters that such actions could encourage other political forces to distort historical events, including the July-August 2024 mass uprising.

‘Just as the Jamaat and the Shibir are attempting to rewrite history without acknowledging their past, other political actors may present alternative narratives of the July-August uprising,’ said the leader of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed student body.

He criticised efforts to distort history, particularly concerning the March 25 atrocities and the nine-month War of Independence, highlighting the roles of collaborators such as Rajakar, Al-Badr and Al-Shams.
