A case has been filed against local BNP leaders, activists and supporters following an attack on a Jamaat-e-Islami “yes vote” referendum campaign in Bogura’s Dhunat upazila yesterday.

Abdul Karim, general secretary of Jamaat’s Dhunat upazila unit, filed the case early today, naming 14 BNP leaders and activists along with 50–60 unidentified individuals, Atikul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dhunat Police Station, told The Daily Star.

Following the filing, police conducted raids to arrest the accused, but no arrests had been made as of this afternoon, the OC said.

According to the complaint, seven Jamaat activists were injured in the attack and required hospital treatment. One of them is currently admitted to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (SZMC), while the others received treatment at the Dhunat Upazila Health Complex.

The injured were identified as Ayub Ali, 50; Masud Rana, 49; Ziaur Rahman, 45; Ziaur Rahman Thandu, 43; Abu Bakkar, 48; Samiul Islam Sonet, 30; and Rabiul Islam, 43. Among them, Samiul Islam Sonet is undergoing treatment at SZMC, Abdul Karim said.

Speaking to The Daily Star, Abdul Karim alleged that the attack took place around 5:00pm yesterday in the Elangi Bazar area while Jamaat activists were campaigning for the referendum.

“About 200 local BNP leaders and activists first obstructed our leaders and supporters and used abusive language. When we asked the reason, they attacked us with local weapons and brick chips, injuring seven of our leaders and supporters,” he claimed.

Contacted for comment, AKM Touhidul Alam Mamun, president of Dhunat upazila BNP, said the incident was unexpected.

“Our party Chairman, Tarique Rahman, has advised us to remain tolerant under all circumstances. We are warning everyone to ensure that such incidents do not recur in the future,” he said.
