A Bangladesh Nationalist Party activist was shot dead by unidentified miscreants at Raujan upazila in Chattogram on Sunday night.

The deceased was identified as Nasir Uddin, 45, son of late Dudu Mia, of South Shamsher Para under Ward 6 of Kadolpur union.

The incident took place near the victim’s house at Lenga Baillyar Ghata under Kadolpur union at the upazila at about 11:00pm, said the police.

Locally known as a follower of BNP leader and Raujan lawmaker Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury, Nasir had earlier been involved with Jatiotabadi Jubo Dal, the youth front of the BNP, and later joined the BNP, according to the local people.

The police and local people said that locals rushed to the spot after hearing gunshots and found him lying there in a pool of blood.

He was first taken to Raujan Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital in deteriorating condition.

CMCH police outpost sub-inspector Nurul Alam Ashek said that Nasir was brought to the hospital from Raujan with bullet injuries at about 11:30pm Sunday.

‘The on-duty doctors declared him dead after examination. There were bullet marks on several parts of his body,’ he said.

Raujan police officer-in-charge Sazedul Islam said that armed miscreants opened fire on Nasir before fleeing the scene.

‘We recovered three bullet shells from the spot. Police personnel visited the spot and drives are under way to arrest those involved,’ the OC said.

The police officer said that Nasir was a listed criminal and was facing six cases including a murder case.

He said that a few months ago Nasir was hospitalised for long with critical injuries after miscreants had hacked him and returned home from hospital only recently.

The killing took place two days after another BNP activist, Kawsar Uz Zaman Bablu, was shot dead at Ward 9 of Raujan municipality on Friday.

The police have already arrested two people in connection with Bablu’s killing.

According to law enforcement officials, at least 23 people were killed at Raujan in 21 months since August 5, 2024 when the Awami League regime had been overthrown in a student-led mass uprising. The victims were either shot dead in public, stabbed or lynched. Of the deceased, at least 17 were active in politics.

During the period, more than 100 people also sustained bullet injuries.

The police said that over 100 arrests had been made so far in connection with the killings and more than 50 firearms recovered.

The violence was the result of the ongoing strife to establish supremacy in the region to control the extortion ‘trade’ and get hold of the local soil and sand businesses, claimed the police.
