A two-year-old girl died after falling into a rainwater-filled pit while playing near her home amid continuous rainfall in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur yesterday.

The deceased, Saifa, was the daughter of Naim and Fatema in the Uttar Khamer area.

Witnesses and locals said that on yesterday afternoon, Saifa was playing near her house. Due to heavy rainfall in recent days, rainwater had accumulated in a deep hole in the ground near the house. The pit is usually visible, but had become submerged under rainwater. At one point, the child fell into the water-filled pit and drowned.

Family members searched for her. on information, police rushed to the spot and pulled her out of the water, but she was dead already.

According to the inquest report, no visible serious injuries were found on the child's body.

Inspector (Investigation) Md Zubair of Kapasia Police Station told The Daily Star that the death may have occurred after she fell into stagnant rainwater caused by recent heavy rainfall.

“The matter will be investigated, and necessary legal action will be taken,” he said.
