Chinese embassy in Bangladesh has clarified confusion over its distribution of food packages among Dhaka residents in an event attended by its envoy Yao Wen and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami amir Shafiqur Rahman at a school playground in the capital’s Mirpur area on Tuesday morning.

The clarification came at night after the Jamaat on its verified Facebook page claimed that the charity event was jointly organised by the Jamaaat-e-Islami and the Chinese embassy ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the biggest religious festivals for the Muslims.

‘We noted with concern that some social media’s contents about a charity event attended by the Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh this morning were not in consistent with the fact,’ said the Chinese embassy in a statement shared on its official Facebook page.

The statement reiterated China’s friendly policy towards Bangladesh and stressed that they supported the smooth governance by the elected government.

‘We will continue to work together with the Bangladesh government to promote our friendship so as to bring more benefits to our two peoples,’ said the mission.

Later, the opposition party corrected the Facebook posting, saying that the food packages were provided for the residents of Jamaat amir’s Dhaka-15 constituency on behalf of the Chinese embassy.

In another posting, the Chinese embassy said earlier that they donated Eid-ul-Fitr food packages to residents in Dhaka.

Ambassador Yao Wen and Shafiqur Rahman, also the leader of the opposition in parliament, attended the donation ceremony, with over 1,000 local residents participating, it mentioned.

Jamaat amir Shafiqur expressed gratitude for the generous donation, noting that the food packages reflected China’s sincere friendship towards the people of Bangladesh, the embassy mentioned in the statement.

About the issue, Jamaat assistant secretary general Hamidur Rahman Azad said that it was already a resolved matter and he did not like to make any comment on it.
