Only Brazil stand ahead of Germany in terms of FIFA World Cup titles but few nations can match the depth and drama of Germany’s journey to their four crowns.

From 1954 to 2014, across six decades, Germany -- formerly West Germany -- carved out a legacy defined by resilience, reinvention and ruthless efficiency. The four golden stars on their jersey each tell a story worth revisiting.

Germany’s four titles

1954: Switzerland (as West Germany)
1974: West Germany (hosts)
1990: Italy (as West Germany)
2014: Brazil

The miracle of Bern

Germany’s first World Cup triumph came in 1954 in Switzerland when West Germany stunned the mighty Hungary 3-2 in one of football’s greatest finals.

Hungary, famously known as the ‘Mighty Magyars’, entered the match as overwhelming favourites. They were unbeaten in 31 international matches and boasted legends like Ferenc Puskas and Sandor Kocsis. They had even thrashed Germany 8-3 in the group stage.

The final in Bern seemed to follow that script early on, as Hungary raced to a 2-0 lead within eight minutes. But Germany responded with remarkable spirit. Goals from Max Morlock and Helmut Rahn levelled the score within 10 minutes before Rahn struck again in the 84th minute to seal a stunning comeback -- a result forever immortalised as the “Miracle of Bern.”

Glory on home soil

In 1974, West Germany hosted the World Cup and lifted the trophy on home soil, becoming only the fourth host nation to do so after Uruguay (1930), Italy (1934) and England (1966).

The tournament unfolded during a divided Germany era, and West Germany even lost to East Germany in the first group stage before progressing as runners-up. They then won all three matches in the second group stage to reach the final.

At the Olympiastadion, they faced the Netherlands. The Dutch took the lead after just 86 seconds through Johan Neeskens -- the fastest goal in a World Cup final. But West Germany turned the match around to win 2-1, with Gerd Müller scoring the decisive goal.

Up to that point, seven of the first nine World Cup champions had come from behind to win the final – a feat only repeated later by Italy in 2006.

Three straight finals and redemption

After finishing runners-up in 1982 and 1986, West Germany returned to glory in 1990 in Italy.

They became the first team in history to reach three consecutive World Cup finals and joined Brazil and Italy as the only teams at the time to win three titles.

Captain Lothar Matthaus played every minute of the tournament and was also his team’s top scorer with four goals. He reached a then-record 25 World Cup matches (a record later surpassed by Lionel Messi with 26).

West Germany edged past England on penalties in the semifinal before meeting defending champions Argentina, led by Diego Maradona, in the final.

Having lost 3-2 to Argentina in the 1986 final, Germany found redemption this time. Andreas Brehme converted a late penalty to secure a 1-0 win -- a final in which Germany conceded no goals, a first in World Cup history. It was also the first time a European team defeated a Latin American side in a World Cup final.

The match saw another first, with Argentina’s Pedro Monzon and Gustavo Dezotti sent off -- the first red cards ever shown in a World Cup final.

That victory marked West Germany’s final World Cup match before reunification later that year.

A modern masterpiece

Germany’s fourth and most recent title came in 2014 in Brazil, where Joachim Low’s side delivered one of the most dominant campaigns in modern football.

They began with a 4-0 win over Portugal and advanced through the knockouts by defeating Algeria, France and hosts Brazil.

The semifinal in Belo Horizonte produced a historic 7-1 demolition of Brazil -- one of the most astonishing results in football history. During that match, Miroslav Klose surpassed Ronaldo Nazario to become the all-time top scorer in World Cup history with 16 goals.

In the final, Germany defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time, with substitute Mario Gotze scoring the decisive goal.
