Immediate past chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Tajul Islam, has rejected allegations of corruption raised against him, describing them as baseless and unsupported by evidence.

“They are devoid of any substance. No one can produce any evidence in support of these unfounded allegations of corruption against me,” he said in a written statement sent to the media today.

His statement followed accusations of corruption and irregularities raised by ICT prosecutor BM Sultan Mahmud against Tajul and fellow prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim.

Tajul said he had become aware that statements attributed to an ICT prosecutor in Dhaka had been circulated in print and on social media.

“The allegations made by the prosecutor are entirely false, baseless, and intended to undermine the integrity of the ICT trials,” Tajul's statement said.

Referring to his tenure, Tajul said he had always discharged his duties transparently and in strict accordance with the law.

He alleged that the accusations were an attempt to divert attention from ongoing and concluded ICT proceedings involving members of the deposed regime accused of crimes against humanity.

“It is only after my departure that such baseless allegations are being made to unlawfully benefit perpetrators of crimes against humanity by discrediting the entire trial process,” he said.

He also urged all concerned to refrain from making or disseminating false allegations, warning that such claims could adversely affect the integrity and progress of ICT trials.
