A Dhaka court today framed charges against former National Board of Revenue (NBR) member Matiur Rahman in a corruption case over allegations of concealing information on assets worth Tk 1.27 crore and amassing illegal wealth of Tk 5.4 crore.

Matiur, who is now in jail, pleaded not guilty after Judge BM Tarikul Kabir of the Divisional Special Judge's Court read out the charges, Public Prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam told The Daily Star.

The court fixed September 14 for the recording of testimony from prosecution witnesses.

Matiur was brought to the court from prison earlier in the day.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case on December 15, 2024, and submitted the charge sheet on February 3 this year.

He was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from Dhaka’s Bashundhara Residential Area on January 15, 2025. At the time, he was serving as president of the NBR's Customs, Excise and VAT Appellate Tribunal.

Matiur came under public scrutiny in June 2024 after a video of his son, Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat, purchasing a goat for Tk 15 lakh ahead of Eid went viral on social media. The incident prompted widespread media reports about the family's expensive watches, luxury cars and property holdings.

According to ACC lawyers, two more corruption cases involving Matiur are currently under investigation.
