A writ petition has been filed with the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh seeking a directive to declare the July National Charter illegal and contradictory to the Constitution.

The petition also seeks a stay on the implementation of the July National Charter.

Supreme Court lawyer Yunus Ali Akand filed the writ on Wednesday in the relevant branch of the High Court in the public interest.

He said the petition may be heard next week by a High Court bench headed by Justice Razik-Al-Jalil.

The writ names the cabinet Secretary, the Law Ministry secretary, the National Consensus Commission, the chief election commissioner and others as respondents.

Meanwhile, another writ was filed with the High Court on Tuesday, seeking to challenge the legality of the referendum held on February 12 and to cancel the results announced on February 13.

Supreme Court lawyer ABM Ataul Majid Touhid filed the petition in the public interest.
