Two factions of Chhatra Dal in Rangamati faced off today over a programme organised by the newly announced partial committee of the district unit of the student organisation, leaving at least one person injured and prompting authorities to impose Section 144.

The injured was identified as Md Yusuf, a member of the Rangamati municipality unit of Jubo Dal.

According to local sources, around 3:00pm, leaders and activists of the newly formed Chhatra Dal committee came face to face with those who were deprived of positions in the committee.

Supporters of the new committee gathered in the municipality area to bring out a procession, while the rival group took position with sticks in front of the district BNP office. At one stage, the two sides engaged in chases and counter-chases, escalating tension in the area.

Later, army personnel intervened and baton-charged both sides to disperse them, while police also moved in to bring the situation under control.
