National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Dhaka-11 MP Nahid Islam today alleged that the BNP government "orchestrated" President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s resignation as part of a "planned move".

“We have learned that the president has resigned citing physical illness. We believe the BNP government orchestrated his resignation according to its own plan,” Nahid said.

In a reaction to Shahabuddin’s resignation, Nahid made the remarks while addressing a rally as the chief guest at the Netrokona District Collectorate Ground this evening as part of the party's July March programme.

He said that the government should have removed Shahabuddin from office and arrested him immediately after taking power, rather than allowing him to resign.

Nahid also urged the government to remain on high alert to ensure that the former president is not given any "safe exit" or allowed to flee abroad under any circumstances.

He further said, "We believe that all those involved in corruption during the fascist regime, including the former president, must face justice on the soil of Bangladesh."

NCP North Region Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam, along with the party's central and local leaders and activists, was present at the rally.
