There is some reason to be optimistic about the RMG industry; in 2025, apparel exports to the European Union rose nearly 6% year-on-year, reaching €19.41 billion. 

This achievement should not be diminished and indeed underscores the industry’s ability to remain competitive despite numerous challenges that our nation has been facing. This increase is a testament to the hard work of millions of workers and entrepreneurs who despite all odds continue to anchor our economy.

With that said, the year-end figures tell a sobering story. December 2025 saw a sharp decline -- exports to the EU fell over 12% in value compared to the same month in 2024 and such a dip signals potential headwinds that could erode the gains made earlier in the year. 

The challenges will not get easier; from falling unit prices to shifting consumer demand and the ever-intensifying competition from regional and neighbouring nations, Bangladesh cannot afford complacency, and for our RMG sector to remain not only competitive but thrive, much work needs to be done.

Supporting the RMG sector is essential of course, but it is simultaneously important to recognize that support cannot mean dependence. The industry needs policy measures that stabilize export earnings -- investments in worker skills, technological upgrades, and diversification into higher-value products. We have known this for some time now, and not much has changed.

We have also known for some time, however, that Bangladesh must broaden its economic base. Leather, pharmaceuticals, IT services, agro-processing, and light engineering are all industries that hold promise but have not successfully taken the next step towards becoming a legitimate alternative export industry. 

Our future lies in building resilience across industries. While the RMG sector has carried the nation for decades, the next chapter must be about shared strength. The RMG sector will remain the primary pillar, but it cannot be the only one.
