The Mymensingh Medical College authorities on Saturday asked the college students to vacate halls, postponing classes and examinations for seven days, after a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Nationalist Party student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Mymensingh Medical College unit early Saturday that left two people injured.

The authorities took the measures over a clash that continued for about an hour from 2:30am over refuelling motorbikes, according to college authorities and police. 


‘All classes and exams would remain suspended for seven days. They are looking into the overall incident,’ said MMC principal Professor Md Nazmul Alam Khan, following a syndicate meeting.

The students vacated the halls by 9:00am as the authorities in early hours ordered them to vacate the halls by 8:00am, according to the authorities.

A three-member probe committee was formed headed by – MMC Anatomy  department professor Saheli Jannat Sultana – and the committee was asked to submit the probe report within the next seven days.

The injured are Md Muaz, follower of JCD MMC unit convener Tanvir Abdullah, and Mir Hamidur, follower of MMC unit senior joint convener Nure Jawat Rutap.

While Muaz was shifted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital and then admitted to the National Institute of Neuro Sciences and Hospital following overnight treatment at the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and Abdullah is now undergoing treatment at the MMCH Ward No 6, said MMCH police outpost in-charge Md Nazrul Islam.

‘Both of them received injuries in their heads,’ said Nazrul.

According to police and students, Muaz went to Hamidur’s room and an altercation began over refueling motorbike and at one point it turned into a scuffle while Hamidur and his associates beat and kicked Muaz out of the room.

When Hamidur went outside to take tea, he was hit by steel pipe and then Muaz was chased by Hamidur’s associates and Muaz entered a room, they said.

Police and students also said that when Muaz’s followers came forward to rescue him a chase and counter-chase between two groups began and later police brought the situation under control.

Mymensingh’s Kotowali police station officer-in-charge Mohamamd Shibirul Islam said that they detained a student named Nafiul Islam from the scene.

‘We are interrogating Nafiul, but no case was filed so far,’ the OC added.

According to the college authorities, about 1900 students are studying in the college.
