Google has expanded access to 'Notebooks' in the Gemini app to users on the free tier, following an initial launch earlier this month for paid subscribers, according to an announcement from the company.
The feature appears on gemini.google.com under a new 'Notebooks' section in the side panel. Notebooks function as dedicated project spaces where users can organise related chats and uploaded files such as documents and PDFs. Google says any conversation in the Gemini app can be added to a notebook via the overflow menu.
Notebooks sync with Google's NotebookLM application, meaning sources added in one tool automatically appear in the other. This allows users to access NotebookLM-specific features such as Video Overviews and Infographics, even if the notebook was created in Gemini.
Free users can currently add up to 50 sources per notebook. Google AI Plus subscribers receive 100 sources, while Pro and Ultra tiers offer 300 and 600 sources, respectively. Users can provide custom instructions regarding tone and response format, and a 'notebook memory' setting can be disabled if preferred.
The company described notebooks as "personal knowledge bases shared across Google products" and indicated additional features are planned. Availability is currently limited to the web version, with mobile and Mac app support expected in the "coming weeks."
