Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi today said there was no issue between Bangladesh and India that could not be resolved through discussions.

“There is no issue that we cannot sit together and settle. I can say this confidently,” he told reporters after meeting Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at the Secretariat.

Trivedi said differences were natural in democracies.

“There will be issues in a democracy. If there are no issues, then there is no democracy,” he said, adding that issues also arose within families.

Referring to Bangladesh and India as two vibrant democracies, he said people in both countries wanted good relations.

“The ordinary people of India and the ordinary people of Bangladesh want the same thing -- good relations,” he said.

The high commissioner said the two countries could not change their shared history or the fact that they were neighbours.

“We don’t only share borders, we share dreams,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the two countries could resolve their differences through discussions.

“I am very confident, very, very confident,” he said.

Trivedi also spoke positively about his first meeting with the home minister, describing him as humble.

He said he had received respect, affection and warmth during his nearly two months in Bangladesh and was very pleased with his experience here.

Asked about a possible meeting between the two sides, Trivedi said, “It would be good if they sit together.”
