Tawfique Nawaz, husband of Awami League leader and former minister Dipu Moni, has been laid to rest at Banani Graveyard.

He was buried in his father Aminur Rahman’s grave amidst rain at 2:45pm on Thursday, right beside the grave of his mother Khairun Nessa.

Dipu Moni, released on parole for the occasion, was present at the graveyard.

Their daughter Dipannita Nawaz scattered soil over the grave.

Dipu Moni and others then joined a prayer led by the graveyard mosque Imam Maulana Omar Faruk.

After the prayer, she sought blessings for her husband.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police and prison security personnel maintained tight security throughout the burial.

After her husband's burial, Dipu Moni visited the grave of her father MA Wadud, one of the founders of the Awami League, at the same graveyard.

She was then taken to a prison van in the rain after visiting the grave. Her parole was set to expire at 6pm, by which time she was to be returned to District Jail, Munshiganj.

Dipu Moni has been held at Munshiganj jail after her arrest in multiple cases following the 2024 July Uprising.

She was granted 12 hours of parole to attend her husband's funeral.

Her husband, Supreme Court lawyer Tawfique, died at Dhaka's Continental Hospital, formerly United Hospital, on Tuesday night.

The 76-year-old had long suffered from kidney and liver complications. He had suffered a stroke in 2019.

Most recently, on May 27, relatives had taken him to court in a wheelchair to see his jailed wife.

Dipu Moni was brought from jail to the capital in a prison van under tight police escort at 6:15am, reaching her Kalabagan residence around 8:15am.

Tawfique's body was also brought to the residence this morning and kept in a freezer van in the garage below the building.

Beside the van, five people, including the Muezzin of the local Bashir Uddin Road Mosque, were seen reciting the Quran on cloth spread on the floor.

Police maintained a watchful presence around the house, questioning visitors as they arrived.

Shortly before 11am, a bdnews24.com correspondent spoke to one of Dipu Moni's relatives, who had come from Chandpur.

The woman, who declined to be named, said the former minister was deeply distraught and mentally shattered, and had refused to eat.

Zakia Sultana Shefali of Chandpur Awami League came to console her.

"She isn't well. One can only imagine how she must be feeling at a time like this," Zakia.

She added that several other party workers had also come to meet Dipu Moni.

Shortly after 12:15pm, the freezer van carrying Tawfique's body set off for Azad Mosque in Gulshan, with Dipu Moni following soon after in a prison van.

As Namaz-e-Janaza or funeral prayers were held there after Zuhr prayers, she remained outside in the prison van.

After the prayers, she stepped out of the van to see her husband's face for the last time, in an emotional scene.

The funeral prayers were led by the mosque's chief Imam Maulana Abdur Rahim after which Tawfique's younger brother Taimur Nawaz spoke on behalf of the family according to religious custom.

Alongside family members and relatives, Tawfique's friends, colleagues and former classmates attended the funeral, including lawyers Mohsen Rashid, Monirul Alam and Syed Ashraful Haque.

Relatively lesser-known Awami League leaders and activists were seen at the funeral.

Police detained one person after slogans were raised on the road in front of Azad Mosque following the prayers.

After the final viewing, Dipu Moni was taken back to Banani graveyard in the prison van shortly before 2pm.

Following the burial, the van set off for Munshiganj jail.
