Author E Lockhart has officially teased the return of several key cast members for Season 2 of "We Were Liars", the Prime Video adaptation of her best-selling novel.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Lockhart revealed that Joseph Zada — soon to appear as Haymitch Abernathy in "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping" — will return as Johnny Sinclair Dennis, while Emily Alyn Lind will reprise her role as Cadence Sinclair Eastman, the narrator of Season 1. The three Sinclair sisters — Carrie (Mamie Gummer), Penny (Caitlin Fitzgerald), and Bess (Candice King) — who connected the cousins in the first season, will also return.
"We have Emily Alyn Lind coming back as Cadence, and all our wonderful mom actresses, plus Joseph Zada returning as Johnny," Lockhart shared. "New stories will happen with all of those characters in addition to all the Family of Liars juiciness."
The upcoming season will draw from Lockhart's prequel novel "Family of Liars", which explores the teenage years of the Sinclair sisters on Beechwood Island and their mysterious summer together. The adaptation will reportedly interweave the prequel's timeline with new narratives, featuring younger versions of the Sinclair sisters alongside the next generation's storylines.
Lockhart praised showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie for creatively expanding her universe: "They're taking the story from Family of Liars but adding fun new twists and turns. Fans who know the book will see what they expect — and be surprised too. It's going to be really fun."
Fans will also recall the Season 1 cliffhanger — Aunt Carrie encountering the ghost of her deceased son Johnny in the finale — suggesting the supernatural mystery will deepen in Season 2.
When asked if her upcoming novel "We Fell Apart" connects to the TV universe, Lockhart said, "It's a standalone story, but there are little nods to the world of 'We Were Liars'. My showrunners have early copies — we'll see what they cook up."
"We Fell Apart" releases on November 4, while "We Were Liars" Season 2 is now in development at Prime Video.
