A Chhatra Dal activist was stabbed to death during a clash between two factions of BNP in Mirsarai, Chittagong, on Wednesday evening.
The deceased, Gazi Tahmid Khan, 20, son of Alamgir Hossain of North Hinguli, died around 1am on Thursday while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Police and local BNP sources said Tahmid had previously served as the organising secretary of the Islami Chhatra Andolan’s Zorarganj unit and later as joint member secretary of the Safe Road Movement’s Mirsarai upazila unit. Recently, he joined Baraiyarhat Municipality Chhatra Dal.
A Milad Mahfil was organised at the Baraiyarhat South Municipal Market on Wednesday evening, seeking prayers for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s recovery. Tahmid had attended the event.
After the program, a clash broke out between supporters of former Baraiyarhat Municipality BNP President Didarul Alam Niazi and rival activists over a dispute involving a party worker sitting on a chair. During the altercation, Tahmid was stabbed and critically injured.
He was first taken to a private hospital in Zorarganj and later shifted to CMCH, where he succumbed to his injuries. At least five others were also hurt in the clash.
Former municipal BNP president Didarul Alam Niazi said: “This is not a party conflict. Tahmid was killed due to personal enmity. It is a tragic incident.”
Niazi is known as a follower of BNP’s Mirsarai constituency candidate Nurul Amin (Chairman). Nurul Amin also denied any link to internal party rivalry, saying: “A fight broke out between Tahmid and Nazrul Islam, a restaurant owner and BNP leader, over a trivial matter involving one of our workers. As a result, people from two villages clashed, leading to Tahmid’s death. A few days ago, he came to me to join Chhatra Dal, and I advised him to contact Didarul Alam.”
Jorarganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Nazmul Haque said: “There was an argument and a chase between BNP activists on Wednesday evening. Some were injured, and Tahmid later died during treatment. No case has been filed yet. We are investigating and will take legal action.”
