The government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has sent a strong message of good governance over its first five months in power, Prime Minister’s Adviser and PMO spokesperson Mahdi Amin said on Saturday.
He said the statesmanlike leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been established by earning public trust, keeping manifesto promises, demonstrating the capability to tackle immediate challenges, and prioritising national sovereignty.
Mahdi Amin made the statement while highlighting the government's achievements over the past five months at a press conference at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on Saturday afternoon.
The government completed five months in office on Friday after taking oath on February 17 this year.
He said the government is working to pave the way for building a humane, non-discriminatory, and secure Bangladesh, and has sent a strong message of good governance by controlling commodity prices, restoring discipline in the financial sector, and ensuring cost-effective and corruption-free reviews of various projects.
“Rehabilitation of recent flood victims and the reconstruction of the devastated and plundered health and education sectors are underway. Based on the achievements made in the short span of five months, the government is fully committed to the people to build an inclusive, non-discriminatory, and prosperous Bangladesh," he said.
Regarding the law-and-order situation and the judicial system, the spokesperson said justice was ensured in the shortest possible time, citing the verdict in the child Ramisa rape and murder case delivered in 19 days, and the verdict in the Meherpur child rape case in 29 working days.
Meanwhile, the extradition process to bring back convicted Awami League leader and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India is ongoing, and former IGP Benazir Ahmed has been arrested in Dubai with the assistance of Interpol, he said.
The "July Warriors Indemnity Act" and the "Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill" have been passed in parliament.
Highlighting achievements in the economic sector, Mahdi Amin said inflation has come down to 9.16 percent due to well-planned management, and foreign exchange reserves stand at 36.58 billion dollars. A record $3.75 billion in remittances was received last March.
He added that a budget of Tk 9.38 lakh crore has been announced for the 2026-27 fiscal year, and a special fund of Tk 40,000 crore has been formed to meet the capital deficit in the banking sector.
On public welfare initiatives, Mahdi Amin said the government has waived agricultural loans of up to Tk 10,000, including interest, for 12 lakh farmers, supplied rice at Tk 15 per kg to 55 lakh families, and announced free education for female students up to the honours level.
To protect the environment, initiatives have been taken to plant 25 crore trees over the next five years and introduce 250 eco-friendly electric buses in Dhaka, he said.
Referring to the adoption of the "Bangladesh First" policy in foreign relations, the spokesperson said 17 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, and investment proposals worth 9.21 billion dollars were received during the prime minister's visit to China. Expressing solidarity with Palestine, the words "except Israel" have also been re-incorporated into passports.
The spokesperson added that the prime minister has broken traditional protocol by following traffic rules, stopping his car at signals like ordinary citizens, and has banned the use of his personal photographs at official events.
Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abu Abdullah M Saleh, Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman, along with the press team and relevant officials of the PMO, were present at the press conference.
