The Dhaka Fourth Special Judge’s Court on Monday sentenced ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her niece and British lawmaker Tulip Siddiq, nephew Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby and another niece Azmina Haque Siddiq Rouponti in two cases over irregularities in allotment of plots in the Purbachal New Town project.
Judge Rabiul Alam of the court handed down the verdicts, sentencing Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the Awami League, to five years’ imprisonment in each of the cases, and Tulip Siddiq to two years’ imprisonment in each of the cases.
Each of Radwan and Azmina was sentenced to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment in separate cases, said Anti-Corruption Commission’s public prosecutor Khan Mohammad Moinul Hasan.
The court also fined all convicts Tk 1,00,000 each, in default to suffer six more months’ imprisonment. It also ordered the cancellation of two 10-katha plots in Purbachal allotted in the names of Radwan and Azmina.
The lone accused detained in the cases, former Rajuk member Khurshid Alam, was jailed for one year in each of the cases.
The remaining accused in the two cases were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in each case.
The convicts are Hasina’s private secretary Mohammad Salah Uddin, former housing affairs state minister Sharif Ahmed, the ministry’s former secretaries Shahid Ullah Khandaker, Kazi Washi Uddin, former senior assistant secretary Purabi Goldar, administrative official Saiful Islam Sarker, former Rajuk chair Anisur Rahman Miah, former Rajuk members Mohammad Nasir Uddin, Shamsuddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Tanmoy Das, Rajuk director Sheikh Shahinul Islam, former deputy director Nayeb Ali Sharif, former assistant directors Mazharul Islam, Faria Sultana, ministry’s additional secretary Waliullah, former Rajuk member Nurul Islam, and former deputy director Kamrul Islam.
No defence lawyer represented the absconding accused, including Hasina, Tulip, Radwan and Azmina.
The commission’s public prosecutor, after the verdict, said that they expected life term imprisonment, the maximum sentence prescribed in the law, for the accused, but that did not happen. ‘The next decision will be taken after discussing with the commission.’
According to the prosecution, Radwan and Azmina obtained the plots in the Rajuk-administered Purbachal New Town project by concealing information about existing flats or housing facilities in Dhaka, in violation of relevant laws.
According to the case statement, Sheikh Hasina abused her authority as the prime minister to facilitate the allotments, while Tulip Siddiq influenced her aunt to secure the plots for her siblings.
The cases stem from allegations that members of the Sheikh Hasina family unlawfully obtained six 10-katha plots in Purbachal during her tenure as the prime minister.
The ACC filed six cases in January 2025 against Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, sister Sheikh Rehana, nephew Radwan and niece Azmina and Tulip Siddiq and others.
With Monday’s verdicts, judgments have now been delivered in all six cases.
