A 55-year-old primary school teacher died after falling from a rickshaw when two muggers allegedly tried to snatch her bag in front of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka this morning.
The deceased was identified as Ronjina Parvin, headmistress of Bagbari Girls Government Primary School in Gabtali upazila of Bogura.
Confirming the matter, Ibne Mizan, deputy commissioner of Tejgaon division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star that Ronjina had come to Dhaka from Bogura with her husband to consult a doctor at Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital at Farmgate.
They got off at Gabtoli bus terminal early hours of today and took a rickshaw to the hospital, he said.
Around 6:30am, when the rickshaw reached the South Plaza area of the parliament complex, two muggers riding a motorcycle approached from behind and tried to snatch her bag, the police official said.
Ronjina fell from the rickshaw during the scuffle and suffered severe head injuries, he said.
She was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead, added Ibne Mizan.
“We are trying to identify those involved,” he added.
