A case has been filed against Gazi Salahuddin Tanvir, the recently suspended joint member secretary of the National Citizen Committee, over derogatory and defamatory statements about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Facebook.

HS Maftun Ahmed Khan Rubel, president of the Bogura Sadar upazila BNP unit, filed the case on August 2, 2026, with the Bogura Sadar Police Station.

Ibrahim Ali, officer-in-charge of the police station, confirmed the filing to The Daily Star.

According to the case statement, the incident occurred on July 29, 2026, around 3:00pm while the plaintiff was at the BNP party office on Nawabbari Road in Bogura city. Tanvir allegedly posted defamatory remarks on his Facebook profile in the context of recent attacks in Sylhet. Shortly after, he made another provocative post, it said.

The complaint states that the viral posts intentionally demeaned the honour of the prime minister, created widespread public outrage, and compromised national stability and sovereignty. The accused later deleted the posts following public backlash.

OC Ibrahim said, “We have received the complaint, and our preliminary investigation found the allegations to have merit. Legal action will now be taken against Tanvir.”

Meanwhile, the NCP central executive committee suspended Tanvir from his post on July 31 and issued him a show-cause notice.
