Figma, the cloud-based design and collaboration platform, has acquired the team behind AI-powered coding platform Bud, formerly known as Orchids.

Announcing the move, Bud co-founder and chief executive Kevin Lu said the company saw Figma as a natural place to develop the next generation of AI-powered product creation tools.

"Figma is one of, if not the, defining product companies of our time to capitalise on this. It's where ideas start, iterate, and come to life, and a natural home for this exciting new era of work," Lu wrote in a post on X.

Backed by startup accelerator Y Combinator, the company was initially launched as Orchids, a "vibe coding" platform that enabled users to generate applications for mobile, web, Slack, browsers and other platforms using AI. It later rebranded as Bud, positioning itself as an AI agent platform capable of accessing online services, browsing the web and writing code to automate tasks.

As part of the acquisition, Bud said both the Bud and Orchids platforms will shut down on July 18. Users have been asked to migrate their projects before that date.

The deal comes after the BBC reported earlier this year, citing a security researcher, that applications created using Orchids were vulnerable to cyberattacks.

Figma has not disclosed how it plans to integrate the Bud team into its operations. However, the acquisition aligns with the company's recent expansion into AI-assisted software creation. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Last year, Figma introduced Figma Make, a tool for generating web applications, while this year it has expanded integrations with AI coding tools including Codex and Claude Code and introduced its own AI agents.
