Police this afternoon sent a man to jail after he was accused of raping a woman at her home in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj.

The accused, Hossain Ahmed, 26, of Dakshin Gaznaipur village under Gaznaipur union, is a member of the union Chhatra Dal and a candidate for the post of union president, said Nabiganj upazila Chhatra Dal acting convener Sheikh Redwan Ahmed.

According to the case documents, Hossain had become acquainted with a woman from the village and had allegedly been harassing her for some time.

In the early hours of Monday, he allegedly broke into the victim's home, threatened her, and raped her. The woman's screams alerted her parents, who rushed in and detained the accused before handing him over to neighbours.

The victim's mother filed a rape case against Hossain at Nabiganj Police Station last night, said the police station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Monayem Mia.

The OC said the accused was produced before a court this afternoon and sent to jail.

“We have been informed about the incident. The matter is under investigation. Further decisions will be taken based on the results of the investigation,” added Nabiganj upazila Chhatra Dal acting convener Redwan.
