Four people, including a father and son, were killed in a series of clashes between two rival groups over establishing supremacy in Narail Sadar upazila early today, police said.

The deceased were identified as Khalil Molla, his son Tahazzud Molla, 38, their neighbour Ferdous Sheikh, 33, and Osikur Fakir, 35, all from Barakula village.

The clashes erupted around 5:15am in Barakula area of Singasholpur union.

Speaking to The Daily Star, Ajay Kumar Kundu, inspector (investigation) of Narail Sadar Police Station, said two groups led by Khalil Molla and Khair Molla had long been at odds over establishing dominance in the area.

Members of Khair Molla’s group allegedly launched a sudden attack on the opponents early today, triggering a violent clash between the two sides.

“Three men from one group died on the spot. Osikur Fakir from the other group was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” the inspector said.

Additional police have been deployed in the area to prevent further escalation, he added.
