A young man was killed and another injured in a clash between two groups at East Bengal Super Market in Old Dhaka's Sadarghat area on Saturday night.
The incident took place around 11pm on the market's 13th floor.
The deceased was identified as Mitul, son of Md Russell Sardar, from Jhalakathi.
Sutrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Matiur Rahman said police were investigating the incident.
"Preliminary investigation suggests the clash stemmed from previous enmity between workers on the 13th floor. The young man died after sustaining injuries from a pair of cloth-cutting scissors," the officer said.
According to locals and eyewitnesses, a longstanding dispute had existed between former Jubo Dal leader Sobhan, a candidate for a post in the Kotwali thana unit, and Kiran, a former senior joint convener of the Dhaka South unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, over positions and influence between two politically affiliated groups.
