Renowned visual artist and art organiser Shameem Subrana depicts the unframed images of the contemporary world in her ongoing solo art exhibition at Café Lobby at Gulshan of the city.
The exhibition titled ‘Unframed’ organised by East Bengal Coffee Roasters displayed 18 mixed media paintings that portrayed everyday violence in Palestine and also across the world.
The 15-day exhibition began on Saturday, displaying the artist’s recent paintings without frames and in variable sizes, according to her theme Unframed.
An artwork titled Unframed16 shows debris of Palestine while a kid’s t-shirt writes ‘Love My Dad’ which symbolises how the wars impact children.
‘We mostly frame nice memories, beautiful moments and beautiful nature but in the contemporary world you cannot find anything beautiful, most of them are beyond that,’ said Subrana, adding that as an artist, floral or still life is not her language against contemporary violence across the globe.
The variable sizes of the canvas created more freedom for the artist, said Shameem, adding, ‘limiting the size of canvas also limits the artist, and frameless artworks are one of my contemporary aesthetics which also help to organise exhibitions at any makeshift gallery.’
Shameem Subrana had opened a full-fledged gallery titled Gallery Twenty One in Dhanmondi.
Her last solo exhibition was held in New York in 2018.
The exhibition will end on February 7.
