Chittagong University (CU) authorities have taken disciplinary action against a teacher and two students for various reasons, while withdrawing an expulsion order against another student.

Dr Mohammad Abdul Wahed Chowdhury, a professor in the Department of Zoology, and Tahsir Hasan, a history student of the 2025-26 academic session, have been suspended, while Md Wasim, a philosophy student of the 2024-25 academic session, has been expelled.

The decisions were taken at the university’s 568th Syndicate meeting on Friday, Prof Md Shafiqul Islam, pro-vice-chancellor (administration), disclosed today.

Abdul Wahed was suspended for allegedly making a social media post “mocking” the 2024 July Uprising.

“Following criticism over the Facebook post in July this year, the university formed an investigation committee. Based on its findings, the syndicate decided to suspend him and form a new committee to examine the matter further,” Prof Shafiqul said.

Of the two students, Wasim was expelled and Tahsir was suspended for one year over a clash between students of the departments of Philosophy and History, the pro-VC said.

The syndicate also withdrew the expulsion order against Afsana Enayet Emi, a student of the 2018-19 academic session of the Department of Law.

The university had earlier expelled Emi and cancelled her academic certificate over an incident on February 5, 2025, when she was accused of assaulting CU Assistant Proctor Prof Dr Korban Ali following the vandalism of a boat symbol in front of the then-named Sheikh Hasina Hall.

Emi later challenged the decision in the High Court. Following a hearing, the court stayed the university’s decision and ordered that she instead be suspended for six months.

A university official said Emi admitted her mistake and apologised during the court proceedings. As the six-month suspension period had already expired, the university decided to withdraw the previous order.
