The Dhaka Metropolitan Police announced on Monday that it would begin a coordinated drive on April 1 to remove illegal encroachments from the city’s footpaths and roads. The DMP urged traders and shop owners to remove their goods in advance to avoid penalties.

In a public notice issued on Monday, the DMP stated that violators of this directive would face fines, imprisonment, and the confiscation of any goods found blocking footpaths or roads.

The notice highlighted that many shops, restaurants, hotels, workshops, and other businesses were illegally using public walkways and roads to store their goods, causing serious disruptions to pedestrian movement and contributing to traffic congestion. In some cases, activities like vehicle repairs and merchandise displays were also taking place on footpaths, further obstructing public spaces.

The DMP has directed all business owners and establishments to immediately clear any materials obstructing footpaths and roads. The notice further warned that legal action would be taken against anyone continuing such encroachments after the deadline.

‘Mobile courts and DMP enforcement teams will conduct joint drives to remove illegal structures. Those responsible will face action under mobile court laws starting April 1,’ the notice added.

The DMP also called for cooperation from the public and business owners to help ensure the success of the initiative.
