The lone arrested accused in the Rampura shootings case, Chanchal Chandra Sarkar, was brought to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) this morning as the tribunal is set to delivery its verdict in the crimes against humanity.

Chanchal, a former assistant sub-inspector at Rampura police outpost, was brought to the tribunal around 9:00am.

The case was filed against five former police officers, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman, over the killing of two people and the shooting of two others in Rampura during the July 2024 uprising.

The other accused are former additional deputy commissioner of DMP's Khilgaon Zone Rashedul Islam, former Rampura Police Station officer-in-charge Mashiur Rahman, former sub-inspector Tarikul Islam Bhuiyan, and Chanchal Chandra Sarkar.

Formal charges were submitted against the five on August 6 last year. Of them, only Chanchal is currently in custody.

Habibur has already been sentenced to death in a separate crimes against humanity case over the killing of six people in Dhaka's Chankharpul on August 5, 2024.

The accused face charges of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, complicity, facilitation, abetment, incitement, failure to prevent or punish crimes, and command responsibility under the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973.

According to the prosecution, six-year-old Musa was shot and critically injured during police action on July 19, 2024. The bullet passed through the child and fatally struck his grandmother, Maya Islam. Musa survived after treatment, but Maya died of her injuries.

Another victim, Md Nadim, was also shot dead in the same incident.

In a separate incident the same day, a video that went viral on social media showed 18-year-old Amir Hossain hanging from the ledge of an under-construction building. The footage appeared to show two policemen firing at him from close range while he desperately clung to the edge.
