British MP Tulip Siddiq was sentenced to two years' imprisonment by a Bangladesh court in case filed for the irregularities in allocation of plots under the Purbachal New Town project.

Her aunt Sheikh Hasina, the deposed prime minister of Bangladesh, and her mother Sheikh Rehana were also jailed for five and seven years respectively in the case.

Judge Md Rabiul Alam of the Special Judge's Court-4 of Dhaka handed down the verdict in a packed courtroom in the absence of the three accused.

He began delivering the verdicts at 11:30am in the case filed against 17 people, including Hasina, Rehana and Tulip, amid heightened security in the court area.

The Anti-Corruption Commission -- between January 12 to 14 -- filed six separate cases with its Dhaka Integrated District Office-1 over alleged irregularities in the allocation of plots under the Purbachal New Town project.

The ACC alleged that Hasina, in collusion with senior Rajuk officials, unlawfully secured six plots. She was accused in all six cases filed in this regard.

On July 31, charges were framed against 29 people, including Hasina, Rehana, Joy, Putul, Bobby, Tulip and Azmina, in their respective cases.

Tulip used her power to get plots for Rehana, Bobby, and Azmina, say ACC officials.

She denied the allegations, which she said are politically motivated.

Tulip and other individuals, including her aunt, mother, brother and sister, have been on trial in Dhaka since the start of August this year.

She resigned from her roles as economic secretary to the treasury and city minister, saying the allegations from Bangladesh were proving a distraction for the government.
