Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today said his government would fund key welfare programmes, including Family Card and Farmer's Card, by recovering money from funds laundered during the previous regime.
He made the remark while addressing the public gathered at the Shaheed Zia Degree College ground in Bagbari area of Bogura this afternoon during the launch of the second phase of the Family Card programme.
“As we said before the election, we will work to stop the corruption that took place during the previous autocratic regime, when hundreds of crores of taka were laundered abroad and public wealth was stolen,” the prime minister said.
“We want to stop this corruption because this is the people’s money,” he said.
“In sha Allah, we will be able to deliver Family Cards to mothers, housewives and female heads of four crore families within the next five years,” he added.
He then promised to nationalise Shaheed Zia Degree College within a few days.
In the afternoon, the prime minister visited his birthplace in Bagbari under Gabtali upazila.
Apart from this, he also launched a nationwide measles and rubella vaccination campaign and a local canal excavation project.
